International Youth Day – how to get involved!

Practical ways to join the UN’s International Youth Day (IYD) – Wednesday 12 August

The focus of the 2015 United Nations IYD is youth civic engagement. A perfect way to celebrate actions your students have taken through their Passport to Democracy (PTD) work, and any other active citizenship your school has been involved in!

Here are simple ways you can encourage student involvement in IYD:

  • ask students to join the online campaign at #YOUTHDAY – a space where young people share messages, stories, artworks, photos and ideas about civic engagement
  • show your students how teenagers around the world are celebrating IYD, using the global IYD activities map. Ask them to find an activity that looks like fun
  • support students to take this or another action on a school, local, national or international issue they care about! Use the PTD unit or an idea from this toolkit
  • send your students’ actions to [email protected] by 11 August, and it will be added to their global IYD activities map
  • ask your students to check and ‘like’ their favourite of  the 5 #YOUTHDAY finalists

IYD aims to highlight that young people should be involved in the building and designing of their future. As educators, you are already supporting this important message – thank you and keep up the amazing work!
